I guess I wasn't as clear as I thought. I was contrasting the
upbeat, positive, communal, peace & love (i.e. neo-hippie) attitudes that
typified the early rave scene with the current trend towards "dark",
"isolationist", scary vibe. From what little I've heard, the early
detroit stuff was of more varied character, but the shift in popular IDM
over the last few years is quite noticeable. The connection between music
and "neo-hippie" ideals is that one seems to have supplanted the other.
When I referred to fans of this stuff as grumpy, I was being
somewhat facetious. I like a bit of spooky music every now and then as
well, although in general I'm most impressed by music with a balance of
light and dark.
